The Green Acres mall announced on July 10 [2014] that six retailers, featuring a mix of shops and restaurants, are making their way to town, with one already opened, according to a release.

Popular eateries Panera Bread, Häagen-Dazs, Chipotle and Starbucks will join Justice, which opened in April, and Journeys Kids as new shopping options for mall-goers in Valley Stream.

“These new additions tell us that we are truly connecting with our urban and suburban shoppers in this dynamic part of New York,” Amaka Oweazim, marketing manager of the Green Acres Mall, said in a release. “With over 1.8 million square feet of shopping and dining, Green Acres Mall is a popular destination and a great place to shop, dine and be entertained.”

Panera Bread will be built on 4,200 square feet of space and offer its usual assortment of bagels, bread, soups, pasta and handmade sandwiches. It will also offer free Wi-Fi to all their customers.

Häagen-Dazs will open in a 300-square-foot shop, sharing its ice cream, sorbet and frozen yogurt. Starbucks will open in the smallest space of the new franchises at 288 square feet, according to the release. It will offer its usual mix of roasts and pastries.

Chipotle, the fast-food chain that specializes in serving Mexican food, will have a little more than 2,100 square feet at Green Acres.

Justice gives tween girls a new fashion option for clothing, swimwear, accessories and other items and Journeys Kidz will open in a 2,000-square-foot space, offering sneakers, boots and sandals for boys and girls.

According to the release, Starbucks, Journey Kidz and Häagen-Dazs will open this fall. The release did not include the opening dates for Panera and Chipotle.

In June, Oweazim told the Herald that Chipotle is expected to be open in September. There is currently construction happening at the mall, including a “revamp” to the south-side streetscape that includes the removal of the existing exterior soffit and new elevations “to create a modern streetscape with distinct storefront facades,” Oweazim said.

Also, mall entryways are being renovated to make them more prominent and accessible to shoppers. Oweazim said that entrances will remain open during construction, but some may be closed for a time in order to complete the construction safely. November 2014 is the targeted date of completion for the renovations to the mall’s exterior.

“We know that Green Acres has great potential due to its size and location,” Oweazim said. “We are fully committed to investing in the property and further enhancing the overall experience and merchandise mix.”

The Green Acres Mall opened in 1956 and has become a popular place for residents of Valley Stream, Queens and other surrounding communities. Macerich, a real estate company, bought the Green Acres Mall for $500 million in January of 2013. The last renovations occurred under the previous ownership of Vornado Realty Trust in 2006-07.

Green Acres Mall now has 23 fast food or restaurant options available to customers.
